5 Reasons to Read the Bible to Your Kids Daily

So you've got tiny littles.

Littles that don't have a clue what a book is from their Sophie chew toy.

Why then, should you attempt to read the Bible to them each day? Wouldn't that be pointless? Well, nope. Sure won't. Here are my 5 reasons why. Stay tuned till the end, because I've got yet another giveaway for you too!

1. Read to them because... Jesus wants you to.

"...but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Matt 19:14

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

What better way to usher your children to Jesus, than through the Word. I'm not seeing an age requirement on those "little children", so I'm pretty sure spunky Johnny at 6 months qualifies.

2. Read to them because...The Word doesn't come back void.

"...so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:11

We know that the Word is living. So reading such living words with and over your children won't be a waste of time. It just won't. Somehow, someway those words will plants seeds in their hearts. We may not see them come to fruition ourselves...but then again, maybe we will.

3. Read to them because...It'll become an established habit.

Trying to get in the habit when they're older is tough. They whine. They make up excuses. (Shoot, sometimes I make up excuses!) If it's second nature to them-they'll be less likely to try and give it up. It's a good foundation for them in the future.

4. Read to them because...YOU may get something out of it.

Now, this kind of goes along with number 2, but stick with me. Let's be honest, it's easy to read over well loved passages like "Jonah", and think we know the entire story. Thing is, every time you read the Word-you can get something different. From the context in which you are reading to the circumstances in your own life, to whatever God wants to reveal to you, to growth in you walk with the Lord-it all contributes to what those words on the pages say to our hearts. As a mama-this is a great place to find healing for chronic weariness.

5. Read to them because...It exposes them to reading! DUH!

As an avid reader and mama of 4, I know first hand how effective it is to start young to start a love for reading. There are so many studies that have been done of the complete benefit of reading to kids even before they can talk. From exposure to a broader vocabulary to just the overall bonding that comes with reading with a parent-it's a win/win.

Now you know WHY you should read the Bible with your kiddos, how about I've got WHAT you could be reading with them:

Enter in the ESV Family Devotional Bible! This gorgeously laid out Bible isn't a kiddie book, but a full Bible with beautiful art and questions for major stories. Although the questions won't work for a 2 year old, they're great prompts for mom and dad to dig a bit deeper themselves.

It's a solid hard back (my fav, especially for sticky-fingered-booger-faces), and is of average size. It would fit in a standard Bible cover, but honestly-I love to cover so I have chosen to pass.

English Standard Version is what my Bible and Journaling Bible is, so I was REALLY excited that this was an ESV too.

My only complaint? I wish that Jesus actually looked like a Jew, opposed to the surfer hippy that sings Jack Johnson covers on the corner of main street. But I digress, this has been a wonderful addition to our family!

Want to win one for yourself?

It's simple, just post your favorite verse in the comments below, and I choose a winner using random.org. Giveaway ends May 24 at 12:00 am. Giveaway open to US residents only. If you have won a giveaway through Mama Bear Reads in the last 30 days, I would appreciate if you'd hold off on this one!
